Recommendations and Benefits of Orthodontic Treatments for Children

At Specialist Orthodontists Sydney, we follow the Australian Association of Orthodontists’ recommendation to bring your child in for their first orthodontic check-up by age 7.

At this early stage, your child may not need treatment - and that’s okay. The purpose of this first visit is to check for any early signs of problems and to prevent bigger issues from developing later on.

Benefits of Early Orthodontic Treatment
Starting treatment early (when needed) can have many long-term benefits, including:

  • Making space for adult teeth to come through properly
  • Helping the jaws grow in better balance
  • Reducing the risk of injury to teeth that stick out.
  • Keeping space open for teeth that haven’t erupted yet
  • Reducing the need to remove teeth later.
  • Potentially avoiding more complex treatment in the future

If you think your child might benefit from an orthodontic check-up, we’d love to see them.
Follow-up recall visits are completely free - we’ll keep an eye on how their teeth, bite, and jaw
are growing over time.

What is Two-Phase Orthodontic Treatment?

Phase One – Early Treatment
The goal of this first stage is to help the jaw and teeth grow in a way that allows all adult teeth
to fit comfortably. We also look at how the upper and lower jaws fit together.
If we spot issues, we may recommend early appliances (like expanders or partial braces) to
gently guide the development of your child’s smile. This helps us fix problems early before they
become more complicated.

Monitoring Phase
After Phase One is complete, your child’s adult teeth will still be coming in. During this time, we
offer regular monitoring appointments (free of charge) to watch how everything is developing.
In some cases, removing certain baby teeth can help guide the adult teeth into better positions.
We’ll keep you updated and only make recommendations that are in the best interest of your
child’s smile.

Phase Two – Full Treatment
This stage begins once all the adult teeth have come in. Now, we focus on making sure each
tooth is in its perfect position — in harmony with the lips, cheeks, tongue, and bite.
This often means wearing braces on all the teeth for about 24 months, depending on the case.
After the braces come off, we’ll provide custom retainers to help maintain your child’s new
smile for the long term.
